A Celebration Of Mothers

Editor's Note:  Oh, Motherhood.  Never has there been a love so pure.  Never has there been a more rewarding, exhausting, passionate, selfless love...one that gives and gives and gives until you can't possibly give any more, and then somehow, you do.  I have spent my life hearing that "you'll never fully understand the depth of a mother's love until you have children of your own."  I get it now.  Nothing compares, and nothing should be celebrated more.  So today, as we head into this special Mother's Day weekend, let's shout from the rooftops and honor the women whose love knows no bounds.  Thank you, Moms.  Happy Mother's Day.

Celebrating Anita Hogan "This beauty is the true definition of a selfless mother.  She dedicates every ounce of herself to her gorgeous daughter, who in turn has become just like her; kind, compassionate and a beautiful soul from the inside out.  During the rare moments that Anita has for herself, you'll find that she selflessly gives her time and energy towards helping others--her friends, family and community.  Holly is lucky to have Anita as a mother, and we are all lucky to have her as a friend." -- The Brasfield Family

Celebrating Arlene Panzer "Arlene Panzer is a great mom to Debbie and Marc Panzer.  When she isn’t exhibiting her skills as a Maajong champion in the neighborhood, she is doting on her grown children and ESPECIALLY on her two grandchildren, Jake and Jesse.  Arlene worked for many years at Forest Hills High School but still always found time to attend every event that Debbie and Marc participated in whether it be little league or plays.  Her spirit and loving nature were key in Marc and Debbie becoming who they are and instilling the same amazing values that Debbie uses for her children." -- Marc Panzer

Celebrating Cryztal Sayle "Cryztal, You make this family function, you protect us from ourselves, and most importantly - you make us all happy.  Neither your husband nor your kids can or will be able to articulate what your presence means to this family, we are blessed and thankful . . . and while it’s not always demonstrated, rest assured we know it to be true. While it seems hard to adequately recognize someone who carries their family on her shoulders (how can you begin or even continue to thank someone for this????), we will take this opportunity to at least say “thank you Mom, you mean the world to us”.     Love,  Tre, Odin, Diego, and Sugar (no dogs allowed on the plane)."

Celebrating Helen Downs "My Mother, where do I begin?  Words do not do justice to the beauty of my mother, both inside and out.  She has spent my entire life selflessly giving to her children, and now grandchildren.  She is the one who will always answer the phone when you call with words of encouragement and support.  She is the one who will drop everything to be there for you, no matter the distance or what she has to sacrifice.  She is the one who will exhibit compassion and patience, so that you not only feel loved, but can learn to better love in return.  My mom (and my children's GiGi) are these things and so much more.  We are all better for having her in our lives. Happy Mother's Day, today and every day!  We love you." xox, Brasfield Clan   "My Madre is like the sun.  She's a constant, providing warmth with a nurturing ease and dispelling fears by shedding light on life's gloomy corners.  Like the sun she has overseen all stages of my life, like the sun I am happy and grateful for her presence, and miss her when she is not around.  And like the sun, there is only one, my Madre, and I wouldn't have any other." -- Max Downs

Celebrating Jocelyn Scott "My mom is the most loving, fun and creative person I know! She is one of four children born to a mischievously fun mathematician father and witty gin-drinking British mother. She was lucky enough to live abroad as a child, which encouraged her to take me and my brothers to Europe at a young age- and thus we all inherited her wanderlust and adventurous spirit.  Among many of her accomplishments; she raised four successful children who are not too normal or too socially awkward have good table manners, she is a chef extraordinaire, she makes the best "knock you to the floor" margaritas, she is the CEO of the company she runs with my dad, and she does anything for her kids (picking us up at 3am from parties in her bathrobe, always picking up the phone for a good cry or laugh, or dance party in the kitchen)! I admire how devoted and loving she is to her children and husband, all the while making sure not to take life too seriously and to have fun whenever possible.  Here's one perfect example-- with a broken foot in a walking cast, she is the FIRST on the dance floor!  The second photo is from my wedding last fall-- it captures both her outer beauty and her inner warmth and love, with the sun rays glowing behind her.  Mom, thank you for being my best friend, my biggest cheerleader and the best mom ever!" Celebrating Kathy Lopez "My mom, simply put, is a gem. She is selfless, compassionate, patient, and a whole lot of fun. She juggles phone calls from her four daughters all day every day -- fielding our questions on how to cook lasagna to calming our ugly-cry tears after a break-up, and everything in between. She never bats an eyelash at the dizzying amount of airport pick-ups and drop-offs we request every time we get homesick. She goes zip-lining with us through the redwoods when we want an adventure and flies 500 miles to nurse us back to health after a tonsillectomy. I couldn't ask for a better mother and friend. Mom, thank you for everything." -- Nikki Lopez

Celebrating Laura de la Motte "My sister and I are lucky enough to have a Home Economics/Food Science teacher for a mother.  This was not something appreciated right away, as I was an extremely picky eater as a kid.  As I got older, and lived in food mecca cities such as San Francisco, Chicago, New York, and LA I grew to admire how she was even a better chef than any of the fancy restaurants I had the privilege of eating at thanks to client business dinners.  She could have made a killing opening up her own restaurant or catering business, but instead she dedicated her life to teaching, and I am in awe of her.  Teaching students how to combine simple ingredients into a masterpiece, about nutrition, about the importance of the psychological benefits on children from eating dinner as a family. Many of these students probably didn't realize the significance of this learning at the time.  A lot of them came from homes where they didn't have enough money to eat dinner on some nights, or they were left to fend for themselves.  I have heard stories from her former students about how her teaching greatly impacted their lives later on, and how they are now better parents passing on these skills and making time for eating as a family unit.  I can't say enough about this incredible mom and wife (she will be celebrating her 40th wedding anniversary this June).  I sure hit the jackpot with my mom." -- Rebecca Wisniakowski

Celebrating Peg Welch "To Mom, The woman who taught three men how to survive in this world. Whose heart and courage I have spent a lifetime trying to match. You showed me that sacrifice never comes easy. From chasing down the school bus to buying me the ugliest plastic green brief case possibly made, you have always given for my gain. Thank you for the lessons in selfless giving, loving our family and believing in ourselves. Your love is unparalleled; our gratitude is great. Happy Mother's Day Mom." -- Hunter "Mom, thank you for always being passionate about your faith, our family, your career, our love of music, and your tireless quest to raise us to be gentlemen.  We were and are always watching and listening and learning.  You are the ultimate M.O.M. (Mother Of Men).  I should also give you a shout-out for being the best mom-athlete and coach that I know.  You've still got it!" -- Tyler "This is my beautiful Mother-in-Law, Peg Welch, who looks like she could be my sister in this photo! Peg (or Peppy, as my children like to call her) and I have a special bond.  She never had a daughter, and our relationship has grown into more of a mother/daughter bond than a traditional "in-law" relationship.  I cherish our phone calls, oftentimes several times a week, that always to seem to last an hour even when the conversation starts with "I only have a minute!" If you are fortunate enough to know Peg, you love her. She has the rare ability to leave a special mark on everyone she meets.  She has students from decades ago that still remember her as their "favorite teacher".  She is someone who never forgets a birthday, a holiday or a momentous occasion.  Her number one priority is to spend time with her family, and she'll move mountains to make that happen. Our relationship is a special one, and I'm grateful for it every day." -- Morgan Brasfield

Celebrating Rosemary Smith "I could go on and on about what makes my mom so special and why she should be celebrated this coming Sunday. But to me everyday is a celebration of the wonderful person I get to call my mom. She is the most caring, hard-working, encouraging person and she has been a blessing in so many lives. It is from her example that I have learned how to be the best possible person and put others before myself. So many people have told me countless stories of how my mother did something for them, or sang for them, or helped them in need. These are the stories that have shaped my mom into the amazing person I celebrate this coming Sunday. The past year and half has shown even more how strong she truly is." -- Molly Smith

Celebrating Sarah Coglianese "Sarah was diagnosed with ALS in 2012, at the age of 33. She was a runner, married with a one year-old daughter, and a series of unexplained falls led to her diagnosis. I can only imagine how the world shifted under her when she was told she had ALS. Many of us would crumble under the weight of that news. Not Sarah. Instead, she started her blog, Speed4Sarah, to tell her story and the stories of others living with ALS. She describes her day-to-day life and challenges with humor and grace. Others have taken note - she has written for The New York Times and Redbook and has been featured by CNN and most recently A Life Story Foundation. In her own words - 'I have to keep living with positivity because my job is to raise a child.' Sarah's daughter Scarlett is now a strong, independent, wickedly funny six year-old who likes to cook and make others laugh. As Sarah has said, 'my illness is making my daughter stronger'." -- Mala Reddy

Celebrating Sarah Swanson "Dear Sarah, You’ve only been a mommy for 4 years (yes I know, sometimes if feels like an eternity), but in that short time, you’ve become a pro. Each day presents a new challenge that you gracefully and patiently resolve, demonstrating time and again the amazing mother that you are. You give everything you have, every day. And it might not feel like it, but we notice.  We notice your encouragement, your devotion, and your selflessness. We notice how you balance your kids, your husband, and your career. We notice the healthy meals (although we don’t always eat them), the midnight snacks, and the special treats (we ALWAYS eat them). We notice the band aids, the sun screen, and the sanitizer. But we especially notice the hugs, the kisses, and the snuggles. I am blessed to have you as my wife and partner, and Hayes and Larkin are the luckiest kids in the whole wide world. Hayes’ query sums it up nicely, ‘Do you love me more than the planets? Yes, Hayes, my love for you is bigger than all the planets’.   You celebrate us every day. Today is your turn to be celebrated. We love you so much. Happy Mother’s Day!" Love, Hayes, Larkin & Lucas

Celebrating Sarah Swanson

"Dear Sarah,

You’ve only been a mommy for 4 years (yes I know, sometimes if feels like an eternity), but in that short time, you’ve become a pro.

You celebrate us every day. Today is your turn to be celebrated. We love you so much.

Happy Mother’s Day!"

Celebrating Sheena McGee "Sheena McGee is my friend and my hero mom. She takes on challenges in her career as an interior designing with intelligence and grace without compromising her role as a mom. Her daughter Zeeva is 5 years old, has cerebral palsy and epilepsy. Sheena battles tirelessly on the front lines of our medical system: applying for hospital beds at the country's best facilities, negotiating appointments with hard-to-reach specialists, navigating government programs to get funding to help manage the expense of all this. In her career, she stuck her neck out and arranged a flexible work schedule in a male-dominated architecture firm and eventually struck out on her own in order to balance her role as breadwinner and caretaker. Through all of this, she never blinks. Her energy and joy radiate all throughout her community but most powerfully in her own family. Zeeva is so blessed to have a mom like Sheena, although Sheena would say she is the lucky one." -- Noelle Auberger
